IntroductionGarrett Shue is a Christian missionary serving in Papua New Guinea with a love for discipleship and a calling to see the Word of God accessible in every language. From 2023 to 2025, Garrett served in Madang, PNG onboard the YWAM Liberty medical ship, walking closely with local believers and communities and witnessing how lives change when the Gospel is taught and lived out.
In 2026, Garrett began serving with SIL PNG as Chief Communications Officer, supporting Bible translation and Scripture engagement across Papua New Guinea. This work allows him to serve local churches and communities by helping ensure God’s Word is understood, owned, and passed on to future generations. He is sent and supported by Tyndale Bible Translators as he continues long term ministry focused on discipleship and Scripture access. |
An Isolated PeoplePapua New Guinea is an incredibly diverse region, with over 800 spoken languages and 1000+ remote islands all with unique cultures. However the people of Papua New Guinea live with one major challenge: they are isolated!
These islands may look like the tropical scenes you see in movies, but isolation shapes everyday life. Most communities are separated from teaching, training, and ongoing spiritual support. Most people have little to no access to Scripture in their own language, and opportunities for discipleship are rare. Without God’s Word in a language they fully understand, believers struggle to grow in faith, and entire people groups remain without a clear opportunity to hear and follow the Gospel. |
God's TimingGarrett Shue and his close friend Stephen Smith have walked through life together for years. In early 2022, while living in New Jersey, both sensed God leading them to leave what was familiar and step into missions full time. What began as conversations between friends quickly turned into action, and by the beginning of 2024 they both had moved to Papua New Guinea.
Over the next 2 years, Garrett served in missions in Papua New Guinea alongside Stephen through YWAM Ships onboard the Liberty Medical Ship. This season taught him how to live, lead, and serve cross culturally in real and demanding contexts. Those first two years strengthened Garrett’s understanding of missions, sharpened his leadership, and clarified his long term calling, laying a solid foundation for a future life and career in missions. |
Gods Word Changes EverythingThe Gospel of Jesus Christ changes everything. In seasons of pain, confusion, failure, and loss, Scripture grounds us when emotions lie and circumstances feel unstable. God’s Word has carried many of us through moments we would not have survived on our own, giving us truth, direction, and hope when we had none. Now imagine walking through those same struggles without Scripture at all. No written promises. No clear understanding of who Jesus is. That is the daily reality for millions of people, and that is why Bible translation is so important!

Discipleship Grows FaithIn many parts of Papua New Guinea, following Jesus looks very different than it does in places with easy access to Scripture and biblical resources. With hundreds of languages still without a full Bible, many believers are learning what it means to follow Christ before they ever have the opportunity to regularly read God’s Word. This is where discipleship becomes essential!
Discipleship is more than teaching. It is walking alongside someone and modeling a life surrendered to Christ. It shows, through daily actions and relationships, how faith is lived out in real life. We can walk through Scripture together, explaining and applying God’s Word in ways that would otherwise be difficult or impossible because of language barriers. Learning happens through conversation, storytelling, repetition, and shared life, allowing biblical truth to be understood and lived out even when reading Scripture independently is not yet possible. |
Lives Are TransformedLife in Papua New Guinea presents real challenges. Tribal traditions, spiritual confusion, witchcraft, relational conflict, and daily struggles can pull people away from a growing faith. Discipleship creates space for truth to take root deeply, providing guidance, accountability, and encouragement so believers are not left to navigate their faith alone.
God’s Word brings lasting change, and discipleship carries that Word into everyday life. By investing time, relationship, and example, believers grow strong in their faith, overcome challenges, and learn how to faithfully follow Christ. This foundation prepares them to one day receive Scripture in their own language and confidently understand, apply, and live out God’s Word as mature followers of Jesus Christ. This is how the Gospel takes hold, not just in words, but in transformed lives shaped by Jesus Christ! |
