What Is YWAM Ships Kona?
YWAM Ships Kona exists to serve isolated islands and remote shoreline villages through health and healing services. In many parts of the pacific, ships are not just a good option, they are the only option. Islands without airports and coastlines without roads or bridges can only be reached by sea. From its base on the Big Island of Hawaii, YWAM Ships Kona equips, trains, and sends ships and crews to bring practical aid and the hope of the Gospel to communities that would otherwise remain unreached.
From that mission, the YWAM Liberty Medical Ship was deployed to Papua New Guinea, where Garrett served onboard from 2024 to 2026. The Liberty operates along the coastline of the Madang province of Papua New Guinea, reaching remote villages with little to no access to healthcare. Through medical clinics, dental care, health education, and community outreach, the ship partners with local leaders and health workers to address both physical and spiritual needs. For many communities, the arrival of the Liberty means receiving medical care they may not see again for years.
During this time, Garrett served as the Communications Manager for the YWAM Liberty. In this role, he documented and shared stories of what God was doing through the ship, the crew, and the communities being served. His work included capturing medical outreaches, village life, and team ministry, as well as communicating the impact of the work to supporters around the world. Through storytelling, Garrett helped give voice to communities and moments that might otherwise go unseen.
Garrett is deeply thankful for this season of life and ministry. Serving on the YWAM Liberty shaped his understanding of missions, strengthened his calling, and fostered a deep love for the people of Papua New Guinea. Living and working alongside local communities, leaders, and fellow crew members affirmed his desire to continue serving in PNG long term. This season did more than prepare him for future ministry, it anchored his heart to the people, the land, and the work God is doing there.
